Joyetech Atopack Penguin Review: An Impeccable Starter Kit

Chinese company Joyetech are no strangers to the Vaping industry with their solid and reliable offerings over the past years. They have upheld their reputation by putting out a varying range of equipment that has been both cost effective and well performing.

The Penguin Atopack Starter Kit is the newest product available from them, which is a self contained mod that holds a coil and juice cartridge internally. The Penguin kit is aimed at keeping things simple to operate, while providing a satisfying vaping experience. We'll get back to this in a bit...

I would like to thank Heaven Gifts for sending the Penguin Atopack to us for the purposes of this article. And I hope you enjoy reading this review just as much as I enjoyed using and reviewing this Joyetech Atopack Penguin device.

Out of the box

The Atopack Penguin kit comes in a black box with a picture of a penguin on the front in white with some pictures on the back. The box is sturdy and the mod and contents are securely stored inside ensuring there is no potential damage in transit.

The Atopack box contains the Penguin mod, two ceramic coil heads, a USB charging cable, a user manual, and two silicone covers for the drip tip and cartridge. The top comes off the oval shaped mod, which reveals the cartridge.

The cartridge is where both the coils are installed and the juice well is located in the Penguin. This looks like a really clever idea to me, instantly thinking that I could have a few pre-filled cartridges with their own coils installed ready to go. Or to be able to take with me when I want to change up a flavor or instead of taking a bottle of juice around with me. And the silicone cover for the cartridges would mean that it wouldn't spill or leak in my pocket or bag.

The build quality appears to be top notch and seems as if it will hold up to some heavy use. The Penguin Atopack is available in five finishes, I received the black and white version - which is the closest resemblance to an actual Penguin.

The two main components of Atopack Penguin are an internal 2000 mAh battery encased in a zinc-alloy body and the removable cartridge. As well as the coil and juice, the cartridge houses the drip tip which protrudes from the top. All in all a neat little compact mod in terms of appearance and build quality.

The button on the Penguin Atopack is nice and clicky. It is fairly responsive, feels nice under the thumb and doesn't require much pressure to activate the battery. Most importantly the button does not rattle which can be a huge bug bear for many and can make a really good mod a pain to use.

There are five LEDs under the fire button which light up when you use the Penguin mod and signal various operational issues. When the battery is at full capacity the five LEDs will come on. As you run the battery down, they will go out one by one. When you need to recharge the battery the LED lights blink 40 times rapidly.

The micro USB port can only be used for charging, there are no firmware upgrades available for this particular mod from Joyetech. The savior here is that it's a fast charging port, meaning the Penguin charges at 2A.

We are starting to see this feature on more and more mods these days and it means that you don't have to wait as long for your battery to charge. You can be using your mod again in no time. You will be happy to know that the Penguin does work in pass-thru mode, enabling you to keep vaping while charging.

Using Joyetech Atopack Penguin

To install the coils, you need to pull the cartridge off the Penguin mod by directly pulling it off or by using the small indentation on the back of the mod. You will notice there is a silicon place holder where the coil needs to go. Take this out and replace with either the higher-resistance MTL coil (0.6 ohm) or the direct-lung one (0.25 ohm). There is only one way it can go in, so it's very straight forward and quite fool-proof.

To fill up the reservoir, you simply insert your fill bottle or unicorn top into the silicon hole at the bottom of the cartridge. You can fill it up to the top where the markers are, which is 8ml - a ton of liquid! Make sure to drip a few drops of juice onto the coil for good measure. This should speed up the soaking process a little.

An added bonus in Penguin Atopack is that there is a label on the side of the cartridge where you can write the flavor, percentage and milligram of your juice on. This is a handy feature if you are planning on running a few cartridges at once.

Joytech Penguin Charging

Once you've clicked everything back in place all there is to do is vape. There are no adjustments to be made, no extra buttons to fiddle with or no airflow to adjust. Just press the button on five times and you are ready to vape your Penguin Atopack. It's as simple as that and that is a really good thing for beginners and vapers who just want to take things easy.

Given the design, there are no leaks on the Penguin Atopack which is a definite pro. Given the form factor and size of the unit, it is very pocket friendly.

You have the added bonus of no tank sitting on top of a mod, so although the Penguin isn't small, it doesn't have anything protruding from the top (apart from its own drip tip of course). Storing Penguin in your bag, it won't get caught on anything making it an easy option for vaping on the go.

In regards to performance, this Joyetech mod really kicks things up a notch. The flavor is really good and definitely comparable to the other high end atomizers out there on the market these days. It is a condensed, flavorful vape that is certainly satisfying in all regards. There is not really any discernible break-in period that I could taste, this is most likely due to the ceramic coils playing their part in the overall experience.

The vapor production is surprisingly good from the Penguin. It really puts out some clouds and decent ones at that. The fire button is almost instantaneous, with hardly any delay in firing at the coil. All I can say is that this certainly is a very enjoyable vaping experience.

The airflow in Penguin Atopack is not adjustable, so it works really well for direct to lung style vaping. Even with the 0.6 ohm coil, you can't get a true restricted MTL experience from it. The airflow just does not cater for such an experience. If there was some way to adjust the airflow down slightly I would be happy to recommend this to MTL fans straight off the bat.

Joytech Penguin Starter Kit review

Battery life is quite acceptable on the Penguin, however as you run down the battery you will notice a decrease in vapor production. As there is no variable wattage, the 50w maximum is only when the battery is fully charged. Once you drain the battery the overall wattage diminishes as you vape.

The good news is that it will still vape in pass through mode whilst it's plugged in and charging. The Penguin certainly goes through the battery faster when using the 0.25 DTL coil rather than the 0.6 MTL coil. The 0.25 ohm coil will provide you with a slightly warmer, denser vape - so that's the pay off with battery usage.

I've been using the one coil for over a week now with no sign of it giving up or any loss of flavor. This is a good sign for not having to replace coils often and should save you some money in the long run.

Of course, I wasn't the only one to enjoy and create a Joyetech Penguin review. Here's another one for you to check out:

Wrap Up

All in all, I am really happy with the performance of the Penguin Atopack Starter Kit. It really holds its own when compared to some of the other high-end vaping gear available on the market. The flavor and vapor production is impeccable.

And for the price point, Penguin is an absolute no brainer. If that's not enough, then the ergonomics and pocket friendly design are sure to make up for it. Sure it has a few quirks that we have covered, but for the most part it is a very satisfying piece of equipment and couldn't get any simpler to use.

Joyetech have made the device TPD compliant by offering a 2ml cartridge, so this has future-proofed this mod for certain markets in different parts of the world. If this has sparked your attention or you are interested in trying out the Penguin Atopack Starter Kit, I have no hesitation in recommending this to you.

For the price vs performance factor you really cannot go wrong with this kit. Try it out, you will not be disappointed. I hope this has helped you on your quest for your next piece of vaping hardware. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. We look forward to hearing from you.

    1. I find the coils burn out too quickly for very sweet juices. I mix mine with a deeper flavor, Lasts MUCH longer. Menthol is fine.
