Guide to Squonking
Squonking is not new to the vape world, and if you’re a beginner you might be confused or overwhelmed by the amount of choices you have when choosing a vape. Even if you’re an advanced user, this term may still be quite new since it wasn’t that popular.
Now squonking is becoming more and more mainstream, and we’re seeing a lot of manufacturers entering this niche market. Many vapers are mostly familiar with RDAs (rebuildable dripping atomizers), but the one downfall to using this type of atomizer is that you consistently have to drip e-liquid in order to continue vaping. With squonking, it pretty much eliminates this process, giving you the performance of an RDA without the hassle of continuously dripping.
In the Vaping Cheap Guide to Squonking we’ll cover some basics when it comes to this type of vape experience and even recommend some options for the vaper interested in this type of vaping style. Before getting any further into this guide, we’d like to thank our sponsors: GearBest, Direct Vapor and CVapor.
What is a Squonk Mod?
We often get the question, what is a squonk mod? Well, a squonk box mod is relatively similar to other vape mods you see on the market, but inside of a squonk mod there is a bottle which feeds e-liquid up into the attached RDA atomizer. This is the one key difference you’ll see between a squonk mod and a traditional box mod.
Using a squonk mod is incredibly easy and everything is confined within the device itself which adds to the simplicity. No more are the days of carrying a bottle of e-juice with you when you have one right inside of your squonk vape mod. Squonk mods are also called bottomfeeder mods.
Since squonk mods do have to have space inside of them to house an e-juice bottle, many vaping companies tend to manufacture unregulated or mechanical squonk mods in order to keep the size smaller. Remember, for a regulated box mod there is a chip or board which also takes up room, so regulated squonk mods are typically larger than most traditional box mods. As with any mechanical or unregulated device, be sure to understand ohms law and battery safety!
How to use a Squonk mod
Now that you have a bit more understanding of what exactly is a squonker, using one is quite simple. As mentioned previously, a squonk device does house a bottle of vape juice within. In addition to this there is a small space usually on the back or side of the mod which allows you to push or squeeze the bottle. Once you do this e-juice will travel into your atomizer from the 510 connection and saturate your wick and coils. Whatever e-liquid is not needed is sucked back into the bottle once you finish squeezing or pressing the squonk bottle.
Squonk bottles typically contain between 5ml and 7ml of e-juice, which is plenty and should last you quite some time before needing to refill. Also, the squonk bottle is usually located right next to the battery.
What atomizers can be used for squonking?
Not every type of atomizer on the vaping market can be used for this type of vaping style. The type of atomizer you’re looking for to squonk with will have a squonk or BF 510 pin. The reason why you need this specific 510 connection is, because a squonking pin has a hole in the middle which will allow e-liquid to pass through when you go to squonk. Normal 510 pins do not have this feature, so it’s important when choosing an atomizer for squonking that you know for sure this is included.
Some RDAs are designed for squonking and come with it pre-installed while some others have them as an additional accessory that’s included or a separate purchase. Many of these are often called bottomfeed atomizers. We’ll be covering some of this later in this guide.
There are many reasons as to why a vaper would want to get into squonking. As mentioned previously, convenience is a major reason for a vaper to consider squonking. You won’t be refilling your tank or constantly dripping anymore when you start squonking, which is perfect for the vaper who wants to vape on an RDA, but hates the constant refilling. Just to give a comparison, most RTAs or sub ohm tanks have a capacity of 3ml to 5ml and most squonk bottles hold between 6ml and 7ml of e-juice, sometimes even up to 10ml.
Also, to come back to the vaper who dislikes having to drip so often while vaping on an RDA, squonking while you’re on the road is much easier in comparison to dripping yourself. Another factor to consider is that with squonking, majority of the time your vaping on an RDA, which means you’ll be getting RDA level flavor, while when vaping on a vape tank or RTA, you won’t be getting as great of flavor. Lastly, with squonking you won’t be experiencing much leaking since when you squonk, the excess vape juice gets sucked right back into the bottle.
Cons to Squonking
Even though there are tons of reasons why you would want to start squonking, there are some cons to it, just like anything else in the vaping world, nothing is perfect. The first con to be mentioned is that there isn’t much options currently on the market, and a lot of the options are unregulated squonk mods, which some vapers may not prefer. With squonking becoming more mainstream, we’ll start to see more squonk mods hit the market, but as to right now, there’s not that many options.
This leads to the second con, which is battery life. As mentioned earlier, most squonk mods utilize a single 18650 battery, which means you won’t be getting the best battery life. This of course will be determined by the wattage your vaping at, but generally speaking the battery life of a single battery mod isn’t the greatest.
Just be sure to carry an extra 18650 battery with you if you’re going to be vaping a lot or at higher wattages. The last con is that you can still face some leaking issues if you do over-squonk. Even though with squonking it does minimize this issue, you can still experience it. However, we’ll be recommending some atomizers that are great for squonking so you’ll have little to no issues.
In this section, we’ll be going over some great options for the vaper looking to get into squonking. All of the recommended squonk mods and squonk atomizers are based upon performance, quality, and pricing. We will first recommend some squonk mods!
HCigar VT Inbox Squonk Kit
- Powered By Evolv DNA75 Board
- Available as an entire kit
- Maximum Wattage Output: 75w
- Temperature Control (Ni200, Ti, SS)
- Can be fully customized using EScribe Software
The HCigar Vt Inbox Squonk Kit is probably one of the more popular squonk mods on the market, and for good reason! For one, it’s powered by the Evolv DNA75 board, which ensures an accurate wattage output of 75w, and features temperature control for various wire materials including the most popular, Ni200, Ti and SS. What’s even better is that you can connect this device and use the EScribe software to further customize this mod!
The HCigar VT Inbox does require a single high drain 18650 battery for operation, and it’s very easy to access due to how this device is designed. In addition, taking the squonk bottle out is easy when it’s time for refilling, and it does hold about 7ml of e-liquid. The Inbox does feature an ergonomic and compact design, which makes it comfortable to use and easy to take it out on the road!
The included RDA is the HCigar Maze V1.1. It is a fairly compact RDA that features a velocity styled build deck and adjustable bottom and side airflow, giving you tons of airflow options. Due to it having bottom airflow and a short profile, be sure not to over-squonk with this one as you can experience leaking. Regardless, it’s a great flavor chasing RDA and an excellent match for the VT Inbox.
Kanger Dripbox 2 80w TC Squonk Kit
- Maximum Wattage Output: 80w
- Temperature Control (Ni200, Ti, SS)
- Available as a full kit
- 7ml Squonk Bottle
- Requires a Single High Drain 18650 Battery
The Kanger Dripbox 2 80w TC Squonk Kit is another excellent choice for a vaper wanting to get into squonking. For one, it’s available as a full starter kit, so it basically includes everything you need to start squonking aside from an 18650 battery and e-juice. The Kanger Dripbox 2 does require a single high drain 18650 battery for operation, and has a maximum wattage output of 80w. It also features temperature control for Ni200, Ti and SS wires. The included squonk bottle can hold up to 7ml of e-liquid, so you won’t be filling too often.
The included RDA is the Subdrip 2 RDA. It does come with a pre-built kanthal build (0.2 ohm), but we do recommend building your own coils for better performance. It does feature fully adjustable airflow, and has an airflow option for MTL vaping, which is a nice touch. This RDA isn’t the best performing squonk RDA, but for someone wanting to give squonking a try, it’s a decent choice. However, we do recommend upgrading to something a bit better.
Overall, the Kanger Dripbox 2 80w TC Squonk Kit is a great starter kit for the vaper wanting to give squonking a shot. In addition, it’s a bit more affordable than the HCigar VT Inbox, which is great for the vaper not wanting to invest too much at first.
Eleaf iStick Pico Squeeze
- Maximum Wattage Output: 50w
- Direct Output Voltage
- Simple One Button Operation
- Ultra Compact Design
- 6.5ml Squonk Bottle
The Eleaf iStick Pico Squeeze is the most affordable squonk mod listed in our recommendations, and is also the most compact of the bunch. Like the previous two devices mentioned, this squonk mod does require a single high drain 18650 battery for operation. In addition, this box mod has a maximum wattage output of 50w, and features direct output voltage, which means the output wattage is determined by the resistance of your coil build. The minimum firing resistance is 0.15 ohm, but we find that with a resistance of around 0.2 ohm, you’ll be getting a satisfying vape experience.
The Eleaf iStick Pico Squeeze does feature a simple one button design, and has many safety features implemented, allowing a peace of mind during use. With its ultra compact form factor, it’s easy to carry with you on the go, and will fit in your pocket and purse with no issues whatsoever. The included squonk bottle does have an e-liquid capacity of 6.5ml, which is quite impressive considering how small this setup really is.
For the vaper wanting to get into squonking, and prefers simplicity, then the Eleaf iStick Pico Squeeze is an excellent choice. Be sure to check out our full review which goes more into detail of why we enjoy this squonk vape mod.

- Powered By Evolv DNA250 Board
- Maximum Wattage Output: 167w
- Requires 2 High Drain 18650 Batteries
- Temperature Control (Ni200, Ti, SS)
- 11ml Squonk Bottle
The Lost Vape Drone BF Squonk DNA167 Box Mod is another excellent choice for a vaper wanting to get into squonking, especially the vaper who wants more battery life and power. This device is powered by the Evolv DNA250 board, and it does require 2 high drain 18650 batteries. Since utilizing 2 batteries, this device does have a maximum wattage output of 167w, which will satisfy most vapers. A great feature of this box mod is that the squonk bottle holds a whopping 11ml of e-juice!
Since being powered by the Evolv DNA250 board, you can connect this device to your computer, and utilize the EScribe software to customize it. In addition, this board ensures an accurate vape experience. Do keep in mind since this device does require 2 batteries, and houses the Evolv DNA250 board, it is quite large which may be a drawback for some. However, if the additional battery life, power and squonk bottle capacity is something you’re after, then the size won’t bother you too much.
Overall, the Lost Vape Drone is a solid option for the vaper wanting a bit more power, capacity and battery life. If that’s something you’re looking for in a squonk mod, then the Lost Vape Drone is definitely one to consider.
In this section for recommendations, we’ll cover a few different atomizers that perform great for squonking. Unlike squonk mods, there are much more options when it comes to squonk RDA atomizers. Even though this is true, below are some of the best choices in our opinion when it comes to price, performance and quality.
Oumier Wasp Nano RDA
- 22mm Diameter
- Compact Design
- Ultem Top Cap
- Single Coil Build Deck
- Includes Squonk 510 Pin & Standard 510 Pin
The Oumier Wasp Nano RDA is a single coil only atomizer, and sports a compact design, so it’ll look great on most squonk mods you attach it to. What’s great about this RDA is that the flavor you get from it is top notch, even though it’s a single coil only RDA. Due to how it’s designed, the coil sits right under your mouth while vaping, and the airflow can travel underneath your coil (with the right coil placement) which both add to the flavor you get from it.
Even with a compact form factor, it still has a relatively deep juice well, which is quite impressive. In addition, with a single coil RDA, you won’t be needing tons of power to get a satisfying vape experience, which means you’ll get pretty good battery life with a single battery squonk box mod. The airflow is fully adjustable, so you find the exact airflow to fit your vaping needs.
Overall, the Oumier Wasp Nano RDA is an excellent squonking atomizer, and the best of all, it’s incredibly affordable coming in at under $15.00! If interested in hearing more, check out our full review.
